About Cloudery
Cloudery draws in pen & ink. Each drawing, using pens with points ranging from .2mm to .5mm, takes hours to create. There’s no prior sketching, and neither pencil nor eraser are involved. Unplanned, each grows where the pens take it.
In October 2008 Cloudery established a shop on Etsy selling smaller original artworks as a way to support the charity First Book. With every drawing sold, she donates funds that purchase at least two books for children from low-income families, providing them the opportunity to read and own their first new books.

Here, on the blog, each new drawing is posted as it is finished; the blog serves as the complete Cloudery catalogue. For easy access, or an overview, check out the galleries: small works and large works.

From the First Book website:
First Book is a nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. We provide an ongoing supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs. (www.firstbook.org)
First Book has the highest rating — four stars — by Charity Navigator.
With each sale of every drawing from Cloudery, a donation of at least two new books is made to these children that so need them.
The number of books donated to date is updated in the column of information to the right.

From The Washington Times (12 November 2008):
A look at the statistics shows First Book is a much-needed concept. Studies by Susan B. Neuman, professor of education at the University of Michigan and a former Bush administration assistant secretary of education, show that in low-income neighborhoods, there is an average of one book for every 300 children. In middle-income neighborhoods, there is an average of 13 books for every child. Ms. Neuman’s studies also have found that 80 percent of preschools and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children.

Cloudery is in no way affiliated with First Book, nor affiliated with anyone or anything affiliated with First Book, other than being a donor.

Cloudery has a second shop, Cloudery Digital, that sells digital interpretations of Cloudery artwork. Computer desktop wallpaper, screen savers, a 2009 Desktop Calendar, virtual books for your virtual coffee table, and more.
